Ignite Open Mic Submissions are Now Open

UPDATE: Submissions are now closed!

If you read last week’s announcement, you’ll know that we’re putting on a new Open Mic event on July 8th at the Market Theater in Seattle (7pm-9pm).

The first 20 talk submissions we receive for the open mic will automatically be accepted to go up on stage on the night.

Submissions are open – currently 0 slots available (last updated 6/26). If you act soon you can be on our stage. Scroll down for details.

If you’re more partial to being an audience member, you can buy a $5 ticket for the event right now by clicking here.

How do I submit my talk?

For the Ignite Open Mic, we want to see 20 speakers giving 3 minute talks. Each talk will follow a Ignite format. Slides will still change automatically every 15 seconds, meaning you need to include a 12 slide PowerPoint presentation with your submission.

To become one of our 20 speakers, send us an email at openmic@igniteseattle.com with the following included:

  1. Your full name. (E.g. Major Tom)
  2. The title of your talk. (E.g. Being a Space Oddity)
  3. A short description of what your talk is about. (E.g. I’ll tell a story about the time I went into space in a rocket and then did a space walk.)
  4. Your completed PowerPoint slideshow for the event: this should be 12 slides long and in PPT format. We’ve created a handy template you can use to start you off.

If you make it into the first 20 submissions, we’ll send you a reply within a few days to confirm that you’re going up on stage. Please assume when you submit that you’ll be doing a talk. (So make sure you’re free on the evening of July 8th.)

Being a speaker will get you free access to the open mic. It will also be a great opportunity to wow a supportive audience and the Ignite organizers. Most important of all, you’ll have a whole lot of fun.

We’re looking forward to seeing your submissions!

Announcing: Ignite Open Mic

A new way to speak

We’ve been getting over 80 talk submissions for Ignite lately. But only 12 of those speakers make it up on stage.

We want everybody to have the chance to do an Ignite talk, so we’re starting a new event: Ignite Open Mic.

How does it work?

From June 13th, we’ll start accepting submissions for our open mic night which will take place on July 8th. The first (reasonable) 20 submissions we receive will automatically go up on stage. We’ll be playing with our format a little: this time speakers will only have 3 minutes to give their talk.

Anybody can submit to the first Ignite Open Mic, but we’ll also be reaching out to people who previously submitted Ignite talks to give them a chance to shine.

There’s more info below if you’d like to speak or buy a ticket!

When is it happening?

Want to see 20 speakers take to the stage to give a 3 minute Ignite talk? Here are all the details you need:

Date: July 8th
Time: 7pm-9pm
Location: Market Theater, Post Alley, Seattle
Cost: $5 (cheaper than a fancy IPA!)

Buy your ticket now

But I want to speak!

You lovely, amazing person. Read carefully.

Submissions are open and go here for all the details. If you’re accepted to speak, we’ll send you a reply within a few days to let you know more about the event.

The first 20 submissions we receive will go up on stage. Let’s say the first “reasonable” submissions, just to cover us if somebody submits something really mean spirited.

With your submission, you will need to submit your PowerPoint presentation, along with some other essential details, like your name, talk title and a short description.

For our open mic, we want to see 3 minute talks, with 12 slides which will change automatically every 15 seconds.

Why take part?

For being our open mic guinea pig, you’ll get a free ticket to the event and a chance to earn the respect and admiration of your audience.

But you also get a chance to impress us too. We’re always looking for different ways to get quality speakers on stage at our main Ignite events. We make no promises, but this could be the first step in your path to becoming one of those lucky 12 speakers at Ignite 40.

See you at Ignite Open Mic!

Ignite Seattle Podcast #4: Sarah Schacht – #MeToo, What It Takes To Come Forward

In the latest episode of the Ignite Seattle Podcast, I speak to Sarah Schacht about her talk, “#MeToo, What It Takes To Come Forward” given at Ignite 37.

In 2018, Sarah went on record publicly with her own #MeToo story as part of an article by Molly Redden of the Huffington Post. Her talk was about the logistics of telling a #MeToo story publicly, along with the potential ramifications both personally and professionally.

In the podcast, we talk about why Sarah decided to come forward with her story publicly to begin with. How her perspective has changed about her story over time, and what motivates her to keep going.

Sarah has given multiple talks at Ignite in the past, including “I Got E. Coli So You Don’t Have To” and “Appy Bride: How I Infuriated The Wedding Industry & Got My Dream Wedding.”

Announcing the Ignite Seattle Podcast

After months of anticipation and anxiety, none of which you got to experience, we are excited to unveil our next project to the world. The Ignite Seattle Podcast.

If you’ve read enough and want to subscribe immediately, you can do so by clicking the appropriate links:

Or you can search for “Ignite Seattle Podcast” in your podcasting app of choice RIGHT NOW to listen to our first three episodes. Our first episode is also available for you to listen to on this very page below.

If you have some patience and want to learn a little more about the first episode, and how and why we’ve decided to get into podcasting, then read on.

Who’s the guest on the first episode?

For our first episode, I thought it would be fitting to sit down with Scott Berkun, Ignite Seattle’s MC and speaker coach. He talks all about what it’s like to be…an MC and speaker coach.

Scott shares some critiques of a talk he gave all the way back at Ignite Seattle #6, “How and Why to Give an Ignite Talk“. He also speaks about what he’s learned in the ten or so years since then, and how he passes that knowledge on to our speakers.

Lastly, he gives his thoughts on the importance of being an MC, and answers a question we’re all dying to know, “Where did those red trousers come from?”

If you have any feedback, or fashion tips to pass on to me, or Scott, please email them to podcast@igniteseattle.com or leave a comment below.

Why did we decide to get into podcasting?

“We” isn’t so much Ignite Seattle, as one person named Daniel. Who is currently writing this post in third person, now first person.

I decided to help Ignite to start their podcast because I’ve often sat in the audience at Ignite events wanting to know more about the speakers, and their topics. Unfortunately I’m far too socially anxious and introverted to visit the after party to meet the speakers and talk to them. I’m also not the type of person that would Tweet a total stranger about their Ignite talk.So literally the only option left was for me to spends hours of my life creating a podcast. Now I get to talk to all of my favorite Ignite speakers and learn all about them, and you get to benefit from it!

When will new episodes be released?

Every 2 weeks, on a Monday, a new podcast will be released. They’ll appear here on our website, or you can subscribe to the podcast on iTunes, Spotify, Google Play, or wherever you get your podcasts. Just search for the “Ignite Seattle Podcast”.

What will the format for each episode be?

Each episode will give an opportunity for you to hear one of our favorite past Ignite talks, with an in-depth discussion with its speaker about what inspired their talk, what they didn’t get to say on stage, and anything else that piques curiosity. If there’s a talk or speaker that you’d love to know more about, please send me an email letting me know, and I’ll do my best to get them on the show!
